Scholarships and Aid

"UNL is more wonderful than I ever expected; it has great people, a great environment and amazing opportunities that were readily available as soon as I stepped foot on campus. I get hands-on experience with some very high-end research equipment and I was given enough scholarship money to make it more affordable than the in-state colleges I was looking into."

Scholarship Opportunities

Biochemistry offers three departmental scholarships to undergraduates that total more than $10,000 annually. In addition, several science-specific awards for upper-classmen are available. Our students are highly competitive in university-wide and private scholarships. Collectively, they are awarded well over $1 million each year.

The Benjamin M. Sahagian Scholarship Award

The award commemorates the life of Dr. Benjamin Sahagian. Dr. Sahagian was of Armenian descent and immigrated to the United States as a young child in 1928, along with his mother and two siblings. After establishing himself in his newly adopted homeland, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1958 as well as graduate degrees from Creighton University and McGill University. His career was spent in biochemistry research serving both the public and private sector.

The Roscoe C. Abbott Scholarship Award

Professor Roscoe C. Abbott taught Chemistry at the University of Nebraska for 38 years. He was a member of the American Chemistry Society, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society and Alpha Chi Sigma. Professor Abbott authored the Quiz Book of Inorganic Chemistry monograph. A native of Wood River, Nebraska, Professor Abbott attended Grand Island College and later continued at the University of Nebraska graduating in 1910. He stressed that a person's life should be a useful one, and his life was a testament to that belief, as well as his conviction that a person's life should be a productive one.
