Why do research?

Biochemistry is a research degree. Many career paths are open to the student who is trained rigorously in a Biochemistry academic program, but students are particularly marketable with solid undergraduate research training. Research teaches you to think about scientific questions in a unique way. You learn to think about an important problem in a very detailed fashion, to translate an observation into a novel theory, and to design experiments carefully to test your hypotheses. You gain a passion for the excitement of achieving a desired result, and an appreciation for the challenges that successful scientists overcome in their quest for greater knowledge. Even students whose future career goal is not research oriented will benefit from the insights afforded by undergraduate research experience.
