Nearby Attractions
Mahoney
State Park, about 20 miles from Lincoln, is located on the bank
of the Platte River. Indoor ice skating, camping, cabins, and viewing
towers are among the attractions of this resort park.
Squaw
Creek National Wildlife Refuge, about an hour's drive southeast
of Lincoln, across the Missouri border, is the site of a spectacular
fall migration. Snow geese number in the hundreds of thousands,
ducks, bald eagles, and deer by the hundreds, can be spotted and
viewed from a 10-mile perimeter road that encircles a wetland refuge.
Central Nebraska, a little over an hour's drive west of Lincoln,
is the site of an annual Sandhill
Crane migration involving 80% of the worlds population of these
huge, fascinating birds. Each year, between February and April,
hundreds of thousands of cranes can be seen in the Platte River
and gleaning in the surrounding fields in huge clusters. A live
"cranecam"
documents their activities, but it is worth the visit to see these
creatures firsthand.
Several
manageable and interesting road trips are also among activities
to divert residents of Lincoln: Nebraska City is the site of Arbor
Day Farm and a registered historic city; Omaha,
NE, one hour away, is a major city with a population of about
400,000 that offers many additional options; Kansas
City is about 3 hours away; and Denver,
CO, about 6 hours away.
