Careers for a Biochemist

Biochemistry is one of the most versatile of science majors, the highly respected foundation for a multitude of diverse career options. As a biochemist, you may study diseases, develop better pesticides and medicines, find ways to increase the productivity of agricultural animals or plants, or discover improved methods for protecting our environment and natural resources.

Biochemists are employed by

  • Industries that manufacture and invent new drugs
  • Companies that develop and supply animal feeds, pesticides, and fertilizers
  • Universities and hospitals that perform research
  • Federal agencies, including the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, Environmental Protection Agency, and Department of Energy

With a B.S. degree, you may choose to pursue M.S. and Ph.D. degrees that will qualify you for jobs with greater responsibilities in the areas mentioned above. You are also highly competitive for admission to professional programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, veterinary medicine, or forensics.
