Lincoln, Neb. — Edgar Cahoon, George Holmes Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Center for Plant Science Innovation (PSI), received the Terry Galliard Medal on July 5, 2016 at the 22 International Symposium on Plant Lipids (ISPL) in Göttingen, Germany. The Terry Galliard Medal is awarded biennially to a scientist who has made highly significant contributions to the field of plant lipid research based on a vote of the international plant lipid community. Cahoon was recognized for his research on the elucidation of biochemical pathways for unusual fatty acids in the plant kingdom, the structural basis for fatty acid desaturase substrate specificities, plant sphingolipid and vitamin E metabolism as well as contributions to plant lipid biotechnology. The award was established in 1994 to honor the life and work of the late Terry Galliard, a founder of modern plant lipid research.  In addition to receiving the award, Dr. Cahoon presented the Terry Galliard Lectureship at ISPL with a talk entitled “Unusual Fatty Acid Metabolism: Learning from the Less Common." ISPL also featured a keynote presentation by Jonathan Markham, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and PSI Member, and a presentation by Daniela Morales-Sánchez, a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Heriberto Cerutti in the School of Biological Sciences and PSI.
