Exploring Reactions, Creating Bonds

Biochemistry Club

An organized Biochemistry Club meets approximately once a month to enjoy pizza, meet outside speakers from various fields of interest to members, discuss research or other topics, learn about various career paths, and orchestrate group tours of UNMC, Forensics labs, etc.

Spring 2009 Meeting Schedule

Friday, March 27 (11:30 am)

Trip to the Biomedical Research Training Program (BRTP) at UNMC. Lunch will be provided upon arrival, then we will hear from faculty and current students in the program as well as tour the facility.

Saturday, April 18 (8 am–4 pm)

Biochemistry Club members are coordinating the Chemistry portion of the Science Olympiad on East Campus.

Tuesday, April 21 (5-7 pm)

Biochemistry Club members are hosting a coloring station at Community Night held in conjunction with CASNR Week on East Campus. Elementary students and their families are invited to attend and play games and enjoy the UNL east campus atmosphere.

Wednesday, April 22 (5 pm)

Career Opportunities in Science Panel – held at Hardin Hall (east campus). Panelists from UNMC (research, medicine and dentistry), Pfizer, UNL, USDA to discuss graduate school, industry careers and professional school options. Free pizza. All science interests welcome.

Tuesday, April 28 (5pm)

Senior Send-off and Elections will be held in the Beadle east side courtyard (indoor atrium in case of rain). We’ll have a picnic, hear from graduating seniors and elect officers for 2009-2010. Officer descriptions:

PRESIDENT: Responsible for the organization and overall development of the Biochemistry Club, the President is an active participant in planning club meetings and events, delegating duties and assigning tasks. The President reports to faculty advisors regarding project implementation, progress and completion as well as is responsible for leadership and vision of the club.

VICE-PRESIDENT: The Vice President assists the President and the Treasurer, as well as the other officers, in their duties. The Vice President also organizes and leads meetings in the absence of the President. Additionally, the Vice President will be in charge of maintaining the biochemistry club website.

TREASURER: The Treasurer is in charge of Pepsi requests and event planning forms. The treasurer is also in charge of reimbursement forms and acts with the executive board to help plan meetings.

SECRETARY: The secretary attends all of the regular meetings and officer meetings. The main duty for a secretary is to take the meeting minutes and post them on blackboard. Meeting minutes are the notes of what occurs during the meeting, including what has been planned for a following meeting. It is also the responsibility of the secretary to write thank you notes to guest speakers.

PUBLIC RELATIONS: Public Relations chair is responsible for the promotion of the Biochemistry Club and its events. Duties include creating and printing posters, participating in promotional events (e.g. Big Red Welcome), and reserving billboard spaces. The officer should also contact the staff in charge of weekly announcements for CASNR and A&S before each event and meeting. The PR chair is responsible for posting announcements on both East and City Campuses.

INFORMATION SPECIALIST: The information specialist will be in charge of promoting events and honors within the department by maintaining the bulletin board. The information specialist may also be asked to take photographs at events or meetings.

FIRST YEAR REPRESENTATIVE: Elected at the first meeting of the Fall semester. Provides feedback to the executive group (officers) specific to first year students and their goals, objectives and concerns.
